Carob is most commonly used as a substitute for chocolate. It’s naturally sweet, so—unlike cocoa—it doesn’t need any additional sugar. It’s also free of caffeine and methylxanthines. Healthy and delicious, raw carob powders are high in protein and rich in fiber, contain essential vitamins and minerals, and are a healthy alternative to most snack foods. It has other potential health benefits, too. Tannins in carob may help prevent harmful bacteria from growing in the intestine, and its natural sugars may help treat diarrhea.
